Nexus of migration and cross-border trade

This is one of the five modules that make up the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa Trade Facilitation and Human Mobility Trainer’s Manual. The Trainer’s Manual was developed to build the capacities of border management agents and policy practitioners in the areas of trade facilitation, human mobility and migration issues in the COMESA region. Developed under the auspices of the COMESA Small-Scale Cross-Border Traders Initiative, this curriculum was meant to underline the interrelationship between trade and migration. This particular module examines the inherent interrelationship between cross-border trade and human mobility across international borders. It reiterates that without people, goods and services would be unable to cross international borders and contribute to economic development. The module underscores the need for improved human mobility facilitation, among others, through harmonized immigration and border management standards and procedures to create trade efficiencies and prevent bottlenecks in the movement of people and goods across various international borders. This module seeks to contribute to policy and operational responses that integrate human mobility and border management into trade facilitation responses from an immigration and border management perspective.
