The migration, environment and climate change nexus: exploring migrants’ contribution in addressing climate change challenges in Italy’s mountain areas

Migration in a changing climate can be both a reaction to negative environmental impacts and a driver of resilience and climate change adaptation. In rural and fragile areas of the Global North, migration can contribute to mitigate the socioeconomic effects of depopulation, demographic ageing and economic decline, and countering the environmental degradation that results from land abandonment. 

This study explores the contribution of migration in addressing climate change challenges in three inner areas of central and southern Italy (Valle Subequana, Alta Irpinia and Madonie). Based on a mixed methods analysis, the study provides data on internal mobility, environmental risks and social perceptions of both, highlighting the positive contribution of migration in these territories. Recognizing the crucial role of local authorities, the study provides experts, policymakers and practitioners with good practices and policy recommendations to enhance the potential of migration into climate change adaptation and cohesion policies.
