Indicators of the impact of migration on human development and vice versa
In the framework of its activities, the ACP Observatory on Migration has prepared a list of indicators of the impact of migration on human development. The indicators also explore the impact of human development on migration flows. Drawing upon the experience gathered by other institutions, the ACP Observatory has developed a multi-sectoral tool that will help assessing the role of migration in different domains.
The indicators are divided into nine different areas: economics and assets, demography, education, health, gender, wider social impacts, governance and rights, environment and other transfers. In each one of these sections, a list of subtopics serves to analyze the positive or negative effect that migration has on a determined country's human development.
Several agencies and institutions have been involved in the preparation of this document. The final version of the publication will be available as a complementary document at the forthcoming meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development in Port-Louis, Mauritius, on 21-22 November 2012. Based on the questionnaire used in its impact studies and the Development on the Move approach developed by its Consortium partner ippr and the Global Development Network, the ACP Observatory's indicators provide a useful theoretical framework and benchmarking tool for research and data collection studies on migration.
