Migration Policy Practice (Volume II, Number 6, December 2012-January 2013)

Migration Policy Practice is a bimonthly journal published jointly by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Eurasylum Ltd. It only contributes articles from, and is overseen by, senior officials in Government, EU and international organizations, as well as civil society worldwide, working in the field of migration policy.

Three of the articles in this issue focus on migration and development. The first article discusses the case of a country, Jamaica, which is pioneering the mainstreaming of migration into its national development plan. This is a theme that will be discussed this year at the second United Nations High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development to be held in New York.  The second article focuses on the post-2015 global development framework and outlines the case for including migration and health in any new agenda for sustainable development. The third article on migration and development reminds us of the important contributions that migration can make to local development.

Migration should not only to be mainstreamed into national development plans, but also into local development planning.

The final article in this issue of MPP discusses a subject that has become increasingly important for policymakers since the 11 September terrorist attacks – migration and security. Robert A. Mocny, Director of US-VISIT at the US Department of Homeland Security, reports on how biometrics are being increasingly used around the world to facilitate identity management. He calls for greater international guidance on the use of biometrics as more and more countries around the world are changing their systems for identity management.
