Fostering Financial Empowerment: A Needs Assessment of Financial Inclusion for Migrant Workers in Thailand

Recent years have seen increasing interest in financial inclusion as a global development strategy. Yet, institutional and social barriers to financial inclusion remain especially pronounced among migrant communities in Thailand. This report aims to delve deeper into the experiences of migrant workers with financial services in Thailand, assess their remittance-sending behavior, identify their financial literacy needs, and provide recommendations for addressing those needs. The study draws on extensive desk review and quantitative surveys with 325 migrant workers across seven provinces in Thailand to provide insights into five key sub-areas of financial inclusion: access to banking services, remittances,  debt, savings and financial shocks, and financial literacy and management. The findings from this study will guide the development of financial literacy training guidelines and inform policy advocacy initiatives aimed at promoting financial inclusion for migrant workers in Thailand.
