The State of Migration Management in Central America

An Applied Research

This objective of this study is to assess the current state of migration administration in the Central American countries, and thus provide both national authorities and regional entities in charge of coordinating migration policies with relevant information to facilitate the formulation of effective programmes to strengthen and bring Central American Migration Agencies up to date. This objective falls within the framework of the priority guidelines defined by the Puebla Process.



This study contains the results of an evaluation conducted as part of the research in all Central American countries covering the most relevant aspects of migration management, and paying special attention to operational aspects.



The research sought to draw up a diagnostic on the current situation concerning the management of migration movements in Central American countries, in terms of the aspects selected for evaluation (e.g., current migration policies and legislation, regional organizations in charge of coordinating migration policies; control of entry and exit of people; trafficking of people; border-area movements; seasonal workers; infrastructure, deportations and expulsions; monitoring of foreigners' stay periods and residence permits; migration information records; migration agencies, and others).
