IOM and the Sendai Framework: A Global Review of IOM's Contributions to Strengthening Disaster Resilience

Increasing numbers of people are displaced or compelled to migrate every year due to disasters and environmental stressors. It is expected that disasters – amplified by factors, such as climate change, unsustainable ecosystem use, conflict, urbanization, and water scarcity – will intensify, and that impacts on internal and international population movements will increase in the years to come. As part of its institutional mandate to address mobility dimensions of crisis, IOM is committed to supporting its Member States to reduce risk and build resilience, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030. In 2017, the Organization elaborated a four-year plan of action on disaster risk reduction programming in support of States’ efforts. IOM and the Sendai Framework: A Global Review of IOM’s Contributions to Strengthening Disaster Resilience is a second stocktaking of progress in the implementation of the plan of action focusing on activities in 2018. Based on a survey of 102 IOM projects in 65 countries, the report presents key results and impacts achieved during the year, highlights successful projects and approaches, and reflects on the “lessons learned” to consider in future efforts.
