The 8th ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (AFML): Labour Inspection for the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers

The eighth ASEAN Forum on Migrant Labour (AFML) was hosted by the Government of Malaysia as the ASEAN Chair, on 26 and 27 October 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  This Forum was supported by the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Taskforce on ASEAN Migrant Workers (TFAMW) and Government representatives from ASEAN Member States.

This Background Paper served as information for the eighth AFML participants to discuss the topic of “Labour Inspections for the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers”. It presented existing practices of labour inspections in ASEAN, as well as good practices that are already in place or were implemented in recent years to bolster the compliance of labour laws, that enabled the eighth AFML participants to develop relevant recommendations to better implement “labour inspection” procedures and thus, improve minimum employment rights and ensure decent work opportunities inside ASEAN.
